omigosh
i am at the airport. yea. again. on my way to seoul. yep. again. feeling a bit embarrassed by it actually. and irritated at the same time. this is my third trip to seoul this year. and with the gloomy economic outlook, this is definitely not a wise financial decision. i seemed to have developed a phobia of being 'left behind' when the husband goes on business trips. and this phobia is the one responsible for these airport blogging activities. i think it's time i seriously think of a way to deal with it.
for now, let me just put in a useful piece of info for fellow mums out there who are thinking of going to seoul with their little ones. before i forget. before i go on another phobia-driven trip to some other lala land.
Seoul, Korea.
My daughter is 3 years old and she's one super-active piece of work. i have to constantly think of things to do and places to go with her. so here are some places in seoul which she enjoyed.
Lotte World
For obvious reasons. It's a theme park. She enjoyed the indoor hot-air balloon ride, merry-go-round, the ball room (where you get to shoot balls out of mini canons and some other ball-related gadgets), outdoor mini swinging boat (dunno what it's called), mini ferris wheel, etc.
Samsung Children's Museum
There's an area for children to get taste of the construction industry where they can use foam bricks to build a house. Complete with kid-size safety vests. There's also a water play area, my daughter loved it. Oh, and a playground for younger kids with lego, puzzles, dollhouse, etc.
ok. i gotta go now. i will try my very best to continue this post while in seoul.

Eraser stamps
So let me show you what I've been up to lately. A new hobby, that is.
What! A new hobby? you say. Whatever happened to gocco? WELL... that's been put on hold for the time being... until I install Illustrator CS3 on my computer, and that will have to wait until I get my new laptop which will only come in February next year. My current pc looks set to retire soon and I don't wish to expedite it by installing a heavyweight like Illustrator. Ah, that reminds me. I better backup all my files before that happens.
Ok. My new hobby.
Eraser stamps. Or keshigomu hanko, in Japanese.
It's basically carving your own rubber stamps out of erasers. Yup, that white rubbery thing you use so much in primary school. I carved them using lino cutters and pen knife. I'm pretty happy with the results. I just wished I could get bigger erasers to carve bigger images. Big is beautiful, I say. Leslie from good-ness is helping me check out the sources and pricing, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed so that it won't cost so much.
If you're lucky, you might even get to see one of these babies in your Christmas card this year *wink*.
Childhood dish #1
Anyway, this is childhood dish #1 - "Chai poh egg"

It's basically fried eggs with chai poh (dried radish). In Singapore we can get chai poh in supermarkets and wet markets. They usually come in humble plastic packs, all chopped into tiny pieces and ready to wash and cook. Add them into your eggs, whisk it a little and fry. You can add some salt or soy sauce if you want. It's as simple as that. And it's so yummy! It's definitely my number one comfort fast food.

Home sweet home
My fabric stash is really growing and I desperately need some 'anti-moulding' agent to protect them. Time for some thirsty hippos to the rescue. But actually, do I really need it? Will fabric grow mouldy? I guess they do unless I wash them regularly... I have this obsession to keep things in mint condition. I get upset when my magazines had a slight fold or tear. Very upset when my clothes get stained. Jumping-around-the-house upset if the stain can't be washed off. So imagine my upset level if any one of my fabric gets mouldy.
Anyway, I found yet another blog I love. good-ness. I love that the writer is based in Japan and she writes about Japanese 'goodness' (I bought the Lotta Jansdotter fabric from her, btw). But I especially love her writing style. She writes in really short sentences. I find it very easy to read. It's as if she takes away all the unnecessary 'clutter' from her message. Short, simple, to the point. What do you think?

Off to Phuket!
Lately I've been preoccupied with getting my daughter to sleep on her own, in her own bedroom. Every night in the past few weeks I've been waking up in the middle of the night to her crying. Sometimes twice a night. Because of that, I'm pretty much a zombie during the day. I can hear things, see things and do things, but my mind is still out in dreamland and it's hard to concentrate. Makes me so frustrated sometimes. My husband has started taking turns with me at night now and it looks like our effort is paying off. She goes to sleep willingly on her own now. I guess she's encouraged by my promise to keep coming back in 5 minutes, which I do until she falls asleep. Let's hope she'll stop waking up in the middle of the night soon.
When I come back, I'll introduce two new yummy colour schemes for the purse organizer.
I shall leave you with a picture of my daughter decorating the xmas tree (don't let this picture fool you tho... she only placed a bauble or two, my husband did most of the work).

See you and have a great week ahead!

Irisz Agocs

Still, the thing that intrigues me the most about her works is that, they just seemed so effortlessly drawn, which to me, indicates how talented the artist is.
A dear friend challenged me to come up with an illustration of herself, and since she loves Irisz' work too, I decided to give my friend a combination of both. Here's to you, Pam!

pokkakenni™ purse organizer
I've decided to take the plunge and market one of my hand-made goods. A purse organizer. Here are some pictures.
It's basically a row of pockets to hold things you usually put in your handbag... in an organized and easy-to-reach way. With the purse organizer, you'll never have to dig deep inside your handbag to find your wallet or that ever elusive handphone again. That's because each one of them is conveniently stored in their own separate pockets.
But that's not all. The purse organizer is also perfect for us ladies who just love switching handbags, cause it lets us grab everything in one go and move it from one bag to another. That way, you won't leave anything behind. Pretty cool, huh?
The purse organizer is 5" tall and 20" long, with five pockets, big and small. It fits a handbag of at least 9" opening and 6" deep. It's practical and lightweight too.
Price is S$25 each. But since it's almost Christmas, I've decided to give it away at a special price, all in the spirit of giving and merry-making. So if you place your order from now until 30 Nov 2007, the purse organizer can be yours for just S$20.
You can choose to get it posted right to your doorstep anywhere in Singapore for an additional S$3, or meet me at a central location (eg. City Hall MRT) to collect it. If you're outside Singapore, do write to me and we'll work something out. I'm making it upon order, so please allow 2 days before it's ready for posting or collecting. I can also customize the size of each pocket to fit your favourite items, as long as they add up to 20".

The one of me with nothing to say
Yup, I really don't know what to say. There are so many things going through my mind at the moment, my brain is one big gigatic mess of a furball. What should one do when there're so many things to think of, so many things to do but with so little time to do it? I'm sure there's a book on this somewhere, but I'll need time to read it too, which I don't!
So I shall leave you now with a funny little poem I came across on a magazine in Jakarta.
me no worry, me no care
me go marry millionaire
if he die, me no cry
me go marry other guy

Travelling again...
Btw, I've just found another interesting blog, print & pattern. It's full of cute and beautiful patterns which really opens up your mind to endless ideas and imagination.
My sister just gave me the encouragement that I needed today. She said I should keep drawing and develop my talent. Thanks so much Rin! But gosh... It just feels funny that she described it as a 'talent', coz I'm not sure if I'm talented or not. But whatever it is, as long as I enjoy doing it, I should keep at it and one day, I'll think that I'm good enough to be called 'talented'. So now I'm going to 'develop' my talent and sign up for an Adobe Illustrator course. The clock is ticking and I have my goals to achieve.

Bag #1

On the kid front, my daughter has developed a really sweet habit these past few days. She sleeps in her own bedroom and I usually read a book and pray with her before she sleeps and I leave the bedroom. Now she adds a new step to the ritual. To give me a hug and a kiss. I guess it works both ways, but whatever it is, it feels reeaaally good.

More sketches
I've been fantasizing about printing my own fabric ever since I caught a glimpse of marimekko fabrics a few years ago. I just love the beautiful designs and colours on the fabrics. I don't really know why I'm obsessed with fabrics, since I don't really sew, I just love them. I've acquired a modest collection of fabrics ever since. Most of them remnants, since I can't justify paying the usual price per metre, given my lack of sewing skill. I've collected a variety of fabrics, from Designers Guild's velvets, some pvc, Lara Cameron's printed cotton drill, some bits and pieces from Spotlight, and my latest acquisitions from Sydney (see below pictures to share my excitement), Cloth's printed hemp and Ici et La's colourful deckchair cotton.

I'm going to dedicate the whole of tomorrow to stitch up a sling bag for my darling sister using one of the fabrics. So please keep your fingers crossed for me. Ha!Now back to printing my own fabric. I've been thinking, since I'm so obsessed with fabrics, I should try printing my own designs. This dream was further reinforced after I came across Lara Cameron's Kirin & Co fabric, which then led to Kristen Doran's fabric, which then led to more inspiring designers who print their own fabrics. The difference between them and me are, they have a background in design. I have a background in Finance and Marketing (I've always been more of a number person than a drawing person). That means I have a lot of catching up to do.
Therefore I've been sketching things other than shophouses too.

First sketch
I've known for quite some time now that my dear husband isn't exactly who to go to for encouragement. Don't get me wrong, he IS the man when it comes to a dose of patience and understanding, and I do love him and am thankful to God for that. It's just that sometimes, I wish he'd be more encouraging in areas other than cooking and taking care of the kid. For example, in developing the creative side of me.
You see, I've never really had a hobby and it's been bothering me for who-knows-how-long. I love the idea of making things, but I've never really made anything. I love the idea of drawing, but I've never really drawn since secondary school. I know I don't really have much time for anything now that I am a mom, but I dislike the idea that one should let go of one's personal dreams and interests just because the young 'un came along. My daughter still comes first, but wouldn't she be happier if her mom has an interest in something other than her and is happy pursuing it? I wished my mom had a career or something she's deeply involved in while I was growing up, so she could be happy about it and share her excitement, skills and knowledge with me. Sadly, most of my memory about my mom during my childhood was that of her scolding after scolding after scolding. I absolutely do not wish to be remembered as such by my own daughter.
So, I've decided that I should start developing my creative side and I've been practising my drawing skill and starting projects (or at least planning) for making things with my sewing machine. After some drawing attempts, I remembered that I had drawn a blueprint of a house interior during my secondary school and I was really proud of the result. I guess it was because I was obsessed with precision and blueprints are nothing but that. I also remembered that I absolutely loved and adored conservation shophouses or terrace houses, and I still do. So before long, I started drawing these shophouses. Here are some sketches.

I know they're far from excellent (they're lacking precision!) but it's a start and I am pleased with it. I even thought of selling them! I'm jumping ahead of myself here, but I like to think that someone might like it too and like it enough to want one.So out of curiosity, I asked my husband how much he'd pay for something like that. His answer was quick, "I'd never pay for it." Oookaay.... Then I tried rephrasing, how much would he think was fair for me to buy it. So he said, "Three dollars." THREE DOLLARS?! I couldn't get a plate of chicken rice for three dollars! His justification was, it was a fair price for a 'postcard'. He likened my artwork for a postcard that has been mass printed in China.
I suddenly found myself losing interest in anything. I must've been sitting on the sofa looking like a blank sheet for a few minutes. I was so disappointed and demoralised. But I quickly convinced myself that he was probably not a good representation of my 'target market' and besides, what does he know about 'art'? So it looks like I have only myself to rely on and I am so glad I have this blog to at least clear my thoughts and convince myself to persevere in whatever I'm doing. And if you happen to read it, thank you for reading it this far. I hope you'll give your loved ones some encouragement whenever they need one, even if you think their work is nothing better than a lousy postcard.

Gocco system found!
Still, I have to warn everyone out there to please please please... keep this in mind whenever you order something to be posted within Australia. Try to be at home the whole day on the day the parcel's supposed to be delivered. If you can't, get the sender to give you the reference number of the parcel for Australia Post to identify it and go to your nearest post office, give them the number and collect it yourself. Don't wait for the collection notice to arrive in your mailbox unless you don't mind waiting a few weeks for your parcel to arrive.
I have sent my feedback to Australia Post on this matter and hopefully they'll take it seriously and start doing something about their delivery system. Now what would the world be without righteous people like me?

Sigh...
I'm starting to suspect that my sister's address is responsible for this mess. At the gate of her apartment, the address is indicated as 108 Blablabla Rd, but a lot of places (like the banks and RTA) recognize it as 104 Blablabla Rd. So there's gotta be some discrepancy somewhere and I think this is probably the cause of the confusion.
In the end, I can only blame myself for sticking to 108 and not 104 as my delivery address. Sigh...
